Today we’re introducing our work with Hong Kong Academy, an amazing school that's making a difference in the lives of its students and staff by making period products easily accessible in all the washrooms across campus. It's a small change with a huge impact, creating a more supportive and caring atmosphere for everyone.
Like many of the schools we work with, at Hong Kong Academy, this inspiring story starts with students. Based on their own experiences, and those of their peers, students Louise Toure and Kaela Lam firmly believed that accessing period care products shouldn't be a hassle, like running to the nurse's office or relying on peers.
Inspired by a keynote speech at the Canadian International School SDG Summit, in which our founder Olivia discussed LUÜNA’s award-winning menstrual equity work, Kaela and Louise joined forces with us to bring period care dispensers to washrooms across the HKA Campus. Supported by HKA staff member Ellen Thorne, the goal was clear: make free period products easily available to all students, showing care and recognition for the needs of every menstruating individual.
For Louise, Kaela and Ellen, the initiative went beyond the washrooms; signifying the importance of feeling supported in menstrual health. As such, to compliment the launch of period care dispensers, we delivered a school-wide assembly to Hong Kong Academy students of all genders, explaining the significance of providing access to menstrual products in the hopes of dispelling the silence that often exists around this topic.
We’re honored to be supporting the initiatives of students like Kaela and Louise, working with them, and students across Hong Kong, to ensure that menstrual stigma is no longer a burden for our next generations, as well as inspiring young people to act on causes they feel can bring positive change to the world.
Thank you Kaela, Louise, Ellen and the wider Hong Kong Academy team!
If you’re working at a school or institution that supports young people, we hope this story of student-led action indicates how much of a difference the provision of period products, and dedicated events to destigmatize menstruation, mean to young people, showing them the care, support, and recognition they deserve.
