Employers Hold the Key to Ending Period Inequality - Will You Join Us?

Introducing the Alliance

At LUÜNA, we’ve spent over five years working with leading companies in Asia to introduce period-friendly policies, sustainable product access in washrooms at work, and education programs for employees. Now, we’re taking the next step.

Our Alliance is a membership-based ecosystem that brings together the world’s leading employers, local youth groups, and partner organizations to build more equitable and sustainable cities by eliminating period inequality - not just in their place of work, but their local communities too. By tackling this critical area, the Alliance is driving fairer workplaces, more equitable cities, and a prosperous world for all.

Alliance Goals:

  • Gender Equality – Reduce gender-based economic disparities by eliminating disruptions to education and career progression through improved menstrual health support in workplaces and schools.

  • No Poverty – Increase household income for low-income individuals and families by ensuring long-term access to free, high-quality period products.

  • Quality Education – End menstrual health stigma through education for all genders.

  • Conscious Consumption – Decrease reliance on plastic disposable products through education, awareness, and access to sustainable alternatives.

  • Partnerships for the Goals – Accelerate progress by supporting and funding youth-led menstrual equity initiatives.

  • Good Health & Well-Being – Improve menstrual health literacy to reduce the normalization, trivialization and dismissal of painful symptoms, improving quality of life and health outcomes for women and girls.

About Our Flagship Program: The Community Period Care Program

In 2025, we are proud to launch a collaboration between LUÜNA and Reemi, a globally recognized New Zealand-based NGO committed to delivering reusable, culturally inclusive menstrual products and education to those facing the greatest barriers to safe period care.

Through this initiative, individuals from local low income communities across Hong Kong will be able to choose, for free, reusable period products, ensuring greater comfort, accessibility, and long-term impact, while also driving sustainability.

This initiative goes beyond product distribution. Working with local charities, such as Pathfinders Hong Kong, we will provide education and advocacy to drive systemic change—normalizing conversations, increasing adoption of sustainable solutions, and eliminating period poverty at its root. Through the support of our Alliance Members, we aim to serve 1,000 women through the Program, with results including:

✔ Reducing the Financial Burden of Menstruation: The potential to save over US$60,000 per year in collective household income for 1,000 women and their families.

Minimizing Plastic Waste: The potential to reduce the collective use of over 250,000 disposable, and largely plastic, pads each year.

Breaking Intergenerational Stigma: Equip individuals with the knowledge to manage menstruation with confidence and deliver this information to next generations.

“A [domestic migrant worker] participant of the Menstrual Cup 101 workshop previously received a LUÜNA cup from you and has been using a menstrual cup ever since. Before making the switch, she spent over HKD 460 per month on sanitary pads due to heavy flow. Changing to a cup has significantly helped her financially. She is extremely satisfied with her experience and can’t stop recommending it to her friends.”

Urban Period Poverty: A Hidden Crisis in our Cities

Period poverty—the lack of access to affordable, safe menstrual products and essential menstrual health education—remains a critical issue in cities around Asia, where many low-income communities struggle to access basic period care, forcing individuals to rely on unsafe, unsanitary alternatives and missing opportunities like work, school and community participation.

🔍 What the Research Shows:

  • 28% of domestic migrant workers say menstrual products are a financial burden (HelperChoice x LUÜNA Survey 2024).
  • One-third of ethnic minority women in Hong Kong cannot afford period products (The Zubin Foundation Red Box Project Survey 2020).
  • Refugees survive on just HK$40 a day, with supermarket vouchers that don’t cover period care, leading some women to resort to unhygienic alternatives (Refugee Union).

Charities working to meet menstrual health needs depend on product donations, but these are often irregular, low-quality, and plastic-based, causing:

  • Skin irritation & health risks from synthetic materials
  • Environmental harm due to plastic waste accumulation
  • Lack of long-term solutions, keeping communities trapped in a cycle of need

The Long-Term Benefits of Ending Period Poverty

  • Access to Education & Work – Girls stay in school, and women work without interruptions.
  • Better Health & Hygiene – Safe, reusable products prevent infections and discomfort.
  • Environmental Sustainability – Reducing plastic waste with sustainable alternatives.
  • Financial Relief – Long-lasting products ease the financial burden of monthly period care.
